Clarification for foreigners: don't call Inter with the word ''Inter Milan''

I can't understand why to abroad and especially in England, using the name ''Inter Milan'' for calling Inter
There is a reason or is it just a fad wrong? In Italy is a name that sounds bad and hurt the Inter fans in general

They do the same with other teams, like Juventus (Juventus Turin) and Sampdoria (Sampdoria Genoa).
